Dodging the Amazon Prime HTTP Proxy Error
As mentioned above that just like Netflix, Amazon Prime too has started blocking its Prime Video services from being accessed if you’re anywhere outside the US.
For this reason, you’ll turn to the services of a VPN, hoping it would unblock Prime Video. But because Amazon Prime has been actively blocking VPN services and various US IP addresses, you’re most like going to be hit with a pop-up that says:
This is why I shortlisted “the best VPN for Amazon Prime”, with US servers that still work for unblocking it from anywhere outside the US.
The best VPN for Amazon Prime – That still works!
As mentioned above, not many VPNs aid in unblocking the worldwide ban on Amazon Prime due to copyright issues, geo-restrictions, or censorship laws, regardless of how great the VPN provider is in other ways.
The list of top VPN services will always change with time, depending on if Amazon Prime catches on to it.
But, for now, let’s discuss in a little detail; the VPN providers that still work with Amazon Prime and its Prime Video services, for streaming the best movies, TV shows, and more, unlocking HD content. Plus, they all offer US IP addresses that are required to access this US-based service.
We start with:
1. Surfshark
Price | $2.49/mo. |
Servers | 3200+ servers in 65 countries |
Refund | 30-Days |
Website | Surfshark.com |
Hailing from the British Virgin Island, a privacy-friendly region, has around 3200+ servers in 65 countries. Surfshark is known as one of the big-dog VPNs in the industry, widely used for unblocking giant streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and much more.
It also works in China! To put that to the test, you can even give the Surfshark free trial period a shot.
With capabilities like that, no wonder it has been added to the list of tried and tested VPNs for unblocking Amazon Prime from anywhere out of the US. However, I understand that since Amazon Prime is a US-based service, so connecting to one of the US servers would be the best choice for the speediest connection.
To confirm that, I even asked the chat support if there’s anything I should know regarding its connectivity towards Amazon Prime or Video Services, to which they replied:
Coming to what makes it a strong VPN, it sports heavy security features like military-grade 256-bit AES encryption, an impeccable GPS Spoofing feature, DNS and IP leak protection, Kill Switch, advanced features like Hacklock and BlindSearch, good speeds, and much more that you can go through in my in-depth Surfshark review.
It is also compatible with a number of major devices and apps for Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Firestick. and other Smart TVs, and is one of the strongest VPNs in the market that also allows you to make unlimited simultaneous connections per subscription.
If you want to bypass Amazon Prime restrictions through your Apple of Smart TVs, you can do that through the provider’s Smart DNS feature. Surfshark also has a tutorial for that.
2. NordVPN
Price | $3.71/mo. |
Servers | 5000+ servers in 59 countries |
Refund | 30-Days |
Website | NordVPN.com |
NordVPN, another big guy in the VPN industry that always manages to surprise me with its height of competency.
This Panama-based provider, with its wide range of 5000+ servers in 59 countries, is known for managing to unblock or bypass multiple streaming platforms like US Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and much more, with the addition of Amazon Prime.
Among its wide range of servers, it includes a variety of US locations perfect for unblocking the Prime services. On the website, it is mentioned that you can connect to any server besides the UK and Japan locations, for accessing the US library. If you feel like accessing other libraries, other than the US ones, you should:
However, as mentioned in the image above, it also depends upon the device used. And speaking of devices, it supports Windows, Firestick, Android, iOS, macOS, Android TV, Linux and more.
For more information on its connection, if any problem arises, click on this link for a thorough tutorial, which you’ll find at the bottom of the page. For all those who use Kindle Fire HD, you’ll have to look up another website to find the Android APK, as it’s not available on the Amazon app store.
Moving ahead, let’s discuss some of NordVPN’s security features. It includes DNS and IP leak protection, CyberSec feature, military-grade 256-bit encryption, Kill Switch, good streaming, and torrenting speeds, an AdBlocker, with an allowance of connecting up to 6-devices per subscription.
There are a lot more VPN details you can check out in my NordVPN review, regarding its overall performance, unless you’d prefer testing the VPN out for yourself, using the NordVPN free trial. If you’re not thoroughly satisfied with the VPN services, you could always ask for a refund.
3. ExpressVPN
Price | $6.67/mo. |
Servers | 3000+ servers in 94 countries |
Refund | 30-Days |
Website | ExpressVPN.com |
Also based in the British Virgin Islands, we have ExpressVPN. Known to be an all-rounder in the VPN industry, I’ll say that this provider doesn’t need much introduction.
But, for those of you who haven’t been acquainted with this top provider, let’s just say that streaming and torrenting on restricted platforms won’t really be a problem.
With its wide range of 3000+ servers in the biggest coverage of 94 countries, bypassing Amazon Prime and other noteworthy services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, and BBC iPlayer, will be a piece of cake.
If you’re wondering which servers work the best with Amazon Prime, I contacted the support chat. They were more than honest by telling me that there wasn’t any specific server. This is because it changes from time to time. And if you have a paid subscription, they will lead you to the Prime servers.
Also, something worth mentioning, if fast speeds are what you’re looking for, ExpressVPN has an in-built speed test feature for the Windows and Mac clients, leading you to the best choice. When put to the test, ExpressVPN delivered the fastest speeds in the industry.
If you head over to this link, they’ll also provide details on the required server speeds for Amazon Prime Video quality. You could test the speed and other features using the ExpressVPN 7-day free trial or directly jump into its 30-day refund. If you’re not happy with the service, you could always ask for a refund and cancel your account.
As we know, all good VPNs need to come with heavy security backings. ExpressVPN rolls on bullet-proof 256-bit AES encryption, Kill Switch, Split-tunneling, fast speeds, and much more that you can dive into, in my ExpressVPN review.
It also has a SmartDNS feature called MediaStreamer, which works best for unblocking Amazon Prime and much more, including devices that don’t support VPN services.
This VPN supports a number of major devices and apps for Firestick TV, Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, routers, Smart TVs, and much more, including an app for Kindle Fire HD on the Amazon app store!
Besides being compatible with a wide range of devices and apps, you can also stream on Amazon Prime, while being connected up-to 5 devices simultaneously.
4. CyberGhost
Price | $2.25/mo. |
Servers | 6000+ servers in 90 countries |
Refund | 45-Days |
Website | CyberGhost.com |
Another VPN giant is CyberGhost. This Romanian VPN focuses all its energy on security and privacy. These two targets go hand-in-hand in unblocking some of the biggest streaming services in the industry. Speaking off, CyberGhost unblocks services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Kodi, and more.
CyberGhost even expands its target towards accessing the Amazon Prime services with great ease.
Having one of the biggest platforms of servers, 6000+ servers in 90 countries to be exact; makes it a great tool for bypassing geo-restrictions. CyberGhost also offers a free trial if you’re willing to test the VPN out.
Speaking of servers that can easily unblock multi-streaming services with restrictions, usually, I’d say go for the US server or connect to the best one that can help you. However, CyberGhost already tags its servers with the streaming services it unblocks.
So, this pretty much gives you the liberty to stream securely, on any device it supports. Speaking off, it also allows simultaneous connections up-to 7 devices per subscription!
Since we now know that CyberGhost also puts great effort towards securing your online experiences, let’s take a short look into its security feature structure.
CyberGhost runs with impenetrable 256-bit AES encryption, fast speeds, Kill Switch, Ad and Malware Blocking, a split tunneling feature called Exceptions, and much more. For details on its speed, features, and overall performance, check out my in-depth CyberGhost review for a wider look.
It is compatible with a number of major devices and apps for Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Fire TV, Android TV, browser extensions, and others.
Just in case you’re not familiar with setting up the CyberGhost VPN on your Fire devices, there are a number of tutorials on its website, showing you exactly how you can stream on your Fire devices.
5. FastestVPN
Price | $1.11/mo. |
Servers | 350+ servers in 39+ countries |
Refund | 15-Days |
Website | FastestVPN.com |
FastestVPN, a Cayman Island VPN, hails from a privacy friendly region. It covers a simple list of 350+ servers in 39+ locations.
FastestVPN is has some of the best security and privacy laws. Even with its small coverage, it happens to unblock some of the top streaming services in the industry, which include US Netflix, Disney+, Sling TV, and much more, along with Amazon Prime Video.
Let’s talk about unblocking the US libraries on Amazon Prime. When I first signed into my Prime account I was redirected to the Prime Video page. It shows me a wide spectrum of foreign movies and a tiny portion of US content.
However, I contacted the FastestVPN chat support; which by the way was more than competent. They instructed me to use specific US servers to unblock US libraries.
They further added; to use the app for any supported device, I need to connect to 2 of the USA (Tampa) servers. For browser extensions (Chrome and Firefox) I can connect to any of the US servers, especially the USA (Vancouver), USA (Seattle), USA (Santa Clara), and the USA (North Bergen) server.
I tested it out on both versions and found that it actually did work; opening up the US portion when refreshed! Not bad for a simple server VPN right?
Knowing that it successfully supports streaming and unblocks restricted websites, let’s take a quick look at the security it incorporates. It uses solid AES 256-bit encryption on all protocols except for PPTP, which still runs on good AES 128-bit encryption.
It includes advanced features like DNS leak protection, Kill Switch, Split Tunneling, Smart Connect, and much more! For its overall speed and performance, check out my detailed and tested FastestVPN review.
It supports a number of devices and apps. Some include Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, Kodi, Smart TVs, Firestick, and more! This opens up huge horizons for accessing numerous streaming services.
This provider even has a detailed tutorial on how to get connected with the VPN on your Fire device on its website. Speaking of devices, it also allows you to simultaneously connect up to 10 devices per subscription.
Accessing Amazon Video from outside the US
Amazon Prime and its Prime Video services, just like most multinational companies, took the opportunity to block off its services to many countries around the world, and since it’s impenetrable, many users took comfort from the services of a VPN.
However, it didn’t take much time for Amazon Prime to block off many VPN providers from being able to access its video services. So, long gone are the days of being able to use any VPN service to access Amazon Prime from abroad or outside the US.
Why you need an Amazon Prime VPN
Yes, most VPNs don’t work with unblocking Amazon Prime services, due to geo-blocks or geo-restrictions, but there are other top VPN providers that still work quite efficiently with unblocking geo-restricted platforms, including Amazon Prime, which we’ll discuss in detail further on. So not all hope is lost.
Two reasons you’d need a VPN for Amazon Prime when out of the US
There are two reasons why you need a VPN for Amazon Prime. Firstly, Amazon Prime is accessible to many countries worldwide, but if you’re living in countries like China and Russia, who have strict censorship laws, banning the viewing or bypassing of multiple international streaming services, the only way to access it, is through the services of reliable and safe VPN services.
Secondly, since we know that Amazon Prime Video is only serviceable towards the US, and extended with limitations, towards a handful of countries; gives you all the more reason to need a VPN powerful enough to get you access to the US libraries and Amazon Prime Video services as a whole.
How to choose an Amazon Prime VPN
There are countless VPN providers in the industry that are capable of great performance. Amazon Prime, along with many other streaming services, block VPNs.
Only a few good ones still work! For this reason, I tried and tested out each of the VPNs mentioned on this list (Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and FastestVPN), and picked them out also on the basis of the following attributes:
- Firstly, its ability to bypass geo-blocks, restrictions, and provide access to international websites in countries that have major censorship laws.
- A wide variety or a suitable platform of servers, mainly of US locations.
- Fast speeds and unlimited bandwidth.
- Staunch security and advanced features that are functional, like a Kill Switch.
- Reliable privacy and no-data retention policies.
- Offers the best VPN deals and reliable refund policies.
How to unblock Amazon Prime Video from outside the US with a VPN
If you’ve noticed, I introduced the best VPNs for Amazon Prime, before showing you how to unblock it. I believe that to sign up for a service, you have to be completely sure that it even works effectively. Now that we know the VPNs above are capable of unblocking Amazon Prime Video, let’s get started.
- Download and Install whichever app you chose. I recommend Surfshark since it allows unlimited device connections and the best speeds.
- Launch the app, and connect to a US server.
- Open Amazon.com or AmazonPrimeVideo.com website and start streaming!
Lastly, I have made a tutorial on How to Change Amazon Prime Video Region.
Is Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Instant Video the same thing?
It’s okay to admit it! I too have gotten the two completely mixed up, and it isn’t the same thing.
Amazon Prime Video is an unlimited streaming service, being a substantial part of Amazon Prime Subscription. While, Amazon Instant Video is a pay-per-view service, and doesn’t require a VPN for its access. If you’re an Amazon Prime paid subscriber, you can rent TV shows, movies, and more!
Secondly, to binge on Amazon Prime, you can now gain access to it on your Fire devices. You can put these VPNs to the test using a VPN for Firestick.
To Conclude – Bypassing Amazon Primes geo-restrictions
If unblocking restricted websites like the Amazon Prime services, is what you’re looking for, the only way to access it is with the best VPN services, especially since the service let alone the Prime Video services are only accessible towards a few countries.
The best VPN for Amazon Prime on this list (Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and FastestVPN), are capable enough to give you the smooth Amazon Prime experiences. Hence, it delivers the best speeds, unlimited bandwidth, unlocking US content, furthermore, securing your internet connection.
I also chose them, based on their abilities to unblock many other restricted or foreign websites safely and securely, especially if they’re banned within countries like China and Russia while having affordable prices and superlative features.
