Experiencing issues with Hulu? Can’t lift the Hulu ban? Or is your Hulu VPN not working? In this guide I’ll be addressing all these major issues, getting you straight onto the Hulu bandwagon in no time.
- Surfshark – Budgeted, fast and secure VPN that unblocks Hulu at $2.49/mo.
- NordVPN – Privacy-friendly, best security and unblocks Hulu with great ease at $3.71/mo.
- ExpressVPN – All-rounder VPN for Hulu, best speed results, and unblocking abilities at $6.67/mo.
- CyberGhost – Great VPN for privacy and streaming on Hulu at $2.25/mo.
- FastestVPN – Affordable, robust security, and unblocks Hulu and other services at $1.11/mo.
There are many VPNs in the industry, but only a handful of them can deliver the best performance results. In the case of Hulu, it’s among some of the leading streaming services in the world. However, just like Netflix is geo-blocked in most countries and can only be accessed with a VPN that works for it, Hulu has similar issues.
Hulu first started out back in 2007, available to only the citizens of the US, but in 2010 extended its services to Japan.
Apart from that, Hulu’s availability isn’t cited to be anywhere other than these two countries, and trying to access it from anywhere else could be a risk.
By using the best Hulu VPN, you’ll not only lift its ban within your country but also be able to unblock many other streaming services with the best speeds.
What is a VPN for Hulu?
A VPN in general means software that protects you, your device, and all the activities you carry out online. Among these attributes includes unblocking services. A Hulu VPN is a VPN that is able to break through geo-restrictions and trick Hulu into thinking that you’re a US citizen; allowing access to its service.
Only a selected few are able enough to break through these barriers, which is discussed further on.
However, before we move on with any more details on these mentioned providers, would you know how to choose a VPN for Hulu? I understand that a couple of you have or might’ve picked the wrong ones.
So, let’s talk about that for a minute?
How to choose a Hulu VPN?
Whenever you go for a VPN or any other software, first ask yourself, “What do I need it for?” or “What are the specific tasks that require me to invest in VPN services?”
Once you’ve gathered up information on what you need a VPN for, it’ll make it much easier for you to choose one.
Picking a VPN isn’t as easy as you think. It involves a lot more thought process, evaluation, heavy research, personal testing, and guidance from other VPN user reviews.
However, since not many VPN providers are good enough for lifting the Hulu ban, here’s how I chose 5 of the best Hulu VPNs mentioned on my list:
Bypass geo-blocks or restrictions
Firstly, Hulu isn’t available outside the US. And, it probably is blocked within regions with heavy censorship laws. The VPN you choose has to have technology strong enough to breakthrough the Hulu Firewall, even if it’s within countries like China or Russia.
Server coverage and US-based server network
Since you’re trying to get a hold of a VPN for Hulu from anywhere outside the US, always look for a provider that has a good server coverage. A VPN with a variety of US servers in the ultimate goal. Using anything else other than that won’t really work. This is because Hulu is a US-based service, and to access it, you’re going to need to look like you live within the US. So, make sure you go for one that also offers US IP addresses.
Now, who among you doesn’t love good streaming speeds? No-one. A Hulu VPN has to deliver steady speeds against your local connection. There are times when your ISP throttles with your speed, slowing it down. The Hulu VPN you use should stabilize it.
Security features that make your connection private, securing it from any IPv6/DNS and webRTC leaks is another aspect to look for in a Hulu VPN. All the VPNs I chose have been put through a series of tests, making sure they’re reliable choices.
Lastly, you need unlimited bandwidth for streaming on any service. There’s no point in limited data usage when you and I both know that a binging session is in order where Hulu is concerned.
24/7 support staff
There’s a lot of questions that you’re going to be asking if you ever invest in a VPN for the purpose of attaining access to a foreign app, website, or streaming service. For that, the Hulu VPN providers on my list have an around-the-clock support chat, available to your disposal. And, if they’re not online due to certain circumstances of them being only human, there are FAQ and email systems available too.
The best VPN for Hulu in 2020
Now that you’ve gone through the criterion needed to choose a Hulu VPN, take a look at what the top 5 providers chosen have to offer:
If you’re looking for a Hulu VPN that has managed to make a quick name for itself based on a spectacular performance, get yourself Surfshark.
Privacy on the internet, especially when trying to access Hulu from abroad, won’t be an issue. This is because Surfshark hails from the British Virgin Islands, a privacy-friendly region.
Surfshark has around 1700+ servers in 64 countries; an upgrade made to its previous list. It also covers a wide variety of US servers, which worked great for Hulu. For more information on its ability to unblock services or the app’s performance overall, have a look at my Surfshark review.
It is one of the first VPNs I ran some tests on; managing to unblock Hulu and many other services of the same stature. A few of the other streaming services that Surfshark works great with, is Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Now, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, and more.
When I ran the speed test, Surfshark rendered pretty good results. I even tested out the difference in speed, when being selective about which website or app runs through the VPN, using its Whitelister feature.
The great distinction between Surfshark and the other VPNs on my list is that it’s one of the few good VPNs that allow unlimited and simultaneous device connections. This means you and the entire family or friends can binge on Hulu and much more on all your supported devices.
Speaking of devices, Surfshark is compatible with major operating systems and apps for streaming on Hulu. A few of these include Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Firestick, Linux, and more.
Why don’t you try putting the app to the test, using either the Surfshark 7-day free trial or directly dive into its 30-day refund policy? Either way, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth considering that Surfshark is also a budgeted choice.
When you’re trying to watch a movie on Hulu, you’re also going to need the best security features for maximum privacy, don’t you think? That’s where NordVPN comes in. NordVPN is not only from Panama, a region that doesn’t store any user logs but also has robust security features.
If you’re thinking of investing, it’s like a two in one bargain. Firstly, the VPN isn’t very expensive, and secondly, it comes with great overall performance. It has around 5000+ servers in 59 countries with 1902 of its servers in the US.
I managed to unblock Hulu with no difficulty and with good speeds. You can check the app’s speed test and other advanced features in my NordVPN review.
Did you know that NordVPN uses something known as SmartPlay technology? This is what’s used to unblock Hulu with ease, along with many more services. A couple of the renowned services NordVPN managed to unblock include BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Fox News, Amazon Prime, and more.
On this list of what makes NordVPN great for Hulu, is also because of its device compatibility. A few of the NordVPN supported devices include Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, Fire TV, Xbox, and more. The good part is that NordVPN also allows around 6 simultaneous device connections.
What’s different about NordVPN, are its special servers to prevent DDoS attacks and much more. NordVPN also utilizes double VPN servers for maximum privacy.
I always urge my readers that when buying any VPN, always go for one with a trial or refund and NordVPN supports both. It has a 7-day trial for Android and iOS mobile phones and a 30-day refund. Not happy with the service? Just contact the support team and ask for a full refund or account cancelation.
Next on the list for the best Hulu VPN, we have another British Virgin Islands provider called ExpressVPN. I doubt this VPN needs any introductions, being one of the best I’ve tested so far. ExpressVPN is an all-rounder, which is known mainly for the best unblocking abilities and producing the fastest speed results.
It has around 3000+ servers in a huge coverage of 94 countries. This network is inclusive of over 20+ US servers, in which quite a few managed to unblock Hulu.
Along with Hulu, I also ran ExpressVPN through multiple other streaming services to test its competence. It managed to unblock the US and UK Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO NOW, Hotstar, Disney Plus, and more.
ExpressVPN utilizes a feature called MediaStreamer. It’s a smart DNS proxy that allows you to break through the strongest Geo-blocks, even from a country like China. Yes, ExpressVPN is a little pricey, but don’t you think if you’re getting good VPN services with all the extra added perks like great speed and security; it’s well worth it?
Apart from this, you can check out its extended list of security features and overall performance in my ExpressVPN review.
When you subscribe to the service, you’ll automatically be allowed maximum VPN protection on up to 5 devices, simultaneously. For that, ExpressVPN supports all the major apps and operating systems that work great for Hulu. The more notable ones include Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Firestick TV, browser extensions, Nvidia Shield, and more.
If you still think that ExpressVPN is way out of your budget and feel like you’ll be wasting your investments, why not try it out first? Get the feel of the app or test it using the ExpressVPN free trial for smartphones or the 30-day refund. You could always cancel your account or avail a refund if you’re not satisfied with the service.
CyberGhost is a Romanian provider, known for privacy, and that’s also something you should be looking for when trying to access Hulu. Romania is within a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, putting CyberGhost on the frontline for providing anonymity over the internet.
Now, remember when I mentioned that other user-experiences are always valued? Well, there have been some circumstances where a few users have mentioned CyberGhost not working effectively for Hulu. Now to get accurate results, always try the VPN out for yourself as I did.
When I ran CyberGhost through the testing phase, it managed to not only unblock Hulu but multiple other streaming services. A few of those platforms included BBC iPlayer, Hotstar, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime.
You can connect to any of its US servers, among its 6000+ servers in 90 countries, to unblock it.
Apart from that, CyberGhost comes with some pretty impressive security features that make it perfect for this list. You can have a full view of its performance results, speed tests, and security features in my detailed CyberGhost review.
So, in short, if you’re looking for a great user-friendly app for Hulu, go for CyberGhost! It also allows you around 7 simultaneous device connections. You can either use the app for Windows, Firestick, iOS, Android, macOS. Linux, PS4, Chrome extension, and many other compatible devices.
Why not test CyberGhost using its free trial, or directly run it through the 45-day refund period! That’s long enough for you to know if CyberGhost is best for Hulu and best for you.
Last on the list but not lacking in performance, we have FastestVPN. Have you ever heard of this VPN? If you haven’t, you should get acquainted with it soon! FastestVPN at first glance will allow anyone to deem it as a VPN that delivers the “fastest” speeds.
However, when I tested this Cayman Islands provider, the speed results weren’t the fastest but were pretty good for high-definition streaming quality. You can get the full performance report in my FastestVPN review.
Now hold on, just because FastestVPN isn’t really the fastest doesn’t mean its success rate stops there. I’ve tested quite a few VPNs, and it definitely according to me will rise to the top in no time. It has a simple set of servers but contains a smart collection; of around 350+ servers in 31+ countries, with the inclusion of US servers.
FastestVPN worked smoothly for unblocking Hulu. Along with that included other services like DAZN, Popcorn Time, BBC iPlayer, Disney Plus, Netflix, and more.
You can use the FastestVPN app to stream on Hulu, using multiple supported devices. FastestVPN allows around 10 simultaneous device connections, which is more allowance when compared to other providers on this list apart from Surfshark.
A few of its Hulu supported devices include Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, Apple TV, Android TV, and more.
Also, every VPN should possess an equal amount of features, and that’s exactly what FastestVPN does. FastestVPN has some of the best security features and a wide range of protocols. This aids in making sure its users are well-taken care of when trying to access restricted content.
The only downside according to me is that there’s no FastestVPN free trial, but, however, does involve a 15-day refund on top of each subscription plan. I can’t really blame them for not including the free trial, especially since it’s much more affordable and budgeted than many!
How to set up and use a Hulu VPN?
Using a Hulu VPN allows you to change your physical location, masking its identity and posing as a resident within a country where Hulu is free to access. Getting started with a VPN for it is fairly simple. All you have to do is:
- Subscribe to a VPN service either from the website or web stores that work well with Hulu. I’ve recommended 5.
- Create your VPN account, providing an email, password and choose a subscription plan.
- Download the VPN app on any Hulu supported device you choose.
- Install and launch the VPN.
- Now, connect to a US or Japan server to unblock Hulu. I’d recommend a US one. But if you’re living within Asia, a Japanese server is good, especially for speed.
- Hit the connect button and start streaming!
- Additionally, for extra security and access rights, you should clear your cache and cookies and then start with Hulu.
Do you need a VPN for Hulu?
In case you didn’t know, besides Netflix, Hulu is one of the top-leading streaming services, known worldwide, and, just like Netflix, the Hulu ban is much more difficult to lift when compared.
Hulu is a streaming platform that holds content from all the leading networks in the world. A few of them include ABC, Fox, Cartoon Network, and NBC. It holds a platform with numerous movies, TV shows, and much more from multiple other networks as well.
However, no matter how great a streaming service it is, the fact still comes down to it being aired only within the US and Japan. Also, it’s a fact that many people from around the world are eagerly trying to get into the service. I mean can you blame them? Who wouldn’t want to?
Keeping that in light, Hulu utilizes geo-location technologies to actively block the use of VPNs. Hulu latches on to shared IPs that try and access their service, blocking its connection.
That means you’re going to have to find a VPN that isn’t within Hulu’s radar and one that has the ability to unblock the service.
So, yes, you do need a great Hulu VPN that has a wide coverage of US servers. Without that, there’s no way you’re getting in.
My VPN is not working with Hulu. What do I do?
Knowing that Hulu actively blocks the use of VPNs from allowing unauthorized users into its service, it’s difficult knowing which Hulu VPN really works and which ones don’t.
So, if ever you’re connected to a VPN, and encountered with a message that says…
“Based on your IP address, we noticed you are trying to access Hulu through an anonymous proxy tool. Hulu is not currently available outside the U.S. If you’re in the U.S., you’ll need to disable your anonymizer to access videos on Hulu” …just don’t panic.
You either might be using a less powerful VPN for Hulu or the server you’re connected to might be already blocked by the service.
So, here’s what you do if you’re VPN isn’t working with Hulu:
- It’s as simple as disconnecting from the VPN.
- Reconnect by using a different server.
- Clear your cookies and cache. This helps clear out any left evidence that you might not be a US citizen, judging by your local location information that may have been saved, without connection to the VPN.
- Make sure you’re using a premium Hulu VPN. I’ve recommended 5 that worked for me and multiple other users worldwide.
Can I use a proxy or free VPN for Hulu?
No, you can’t.
It’s so difficult choosing a premium VPN for unblocking the Hulu services. So, how would a free VPN or a proxy service work for it? A proxy as compared to a VPN isn’t as safe nor reliable in general. However, if you’re still looking for a free VPN, there are VPNs with free trial that you should consider instead.
What happens to my Hulu subscription when I travel abroad?
Even if you’re a US citizen and already have a Hulu subscription, but travel very often, chances are 99% that you’re going to be locked out of your account. Well, at least until you return back to US soil. Using a Hulu VPN is your best bet.
What devices can I use to stream on Hulu with a VPN?
There are many popular devices and consoles that can be used to watch Hulu with the help of a VPN. Some of the more popular platforms that support Hulu and other streaming services include Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, Linux, Apple TV, Roku, Firestick.
Which VPNs don’t work with Hulu?
The following VPNs don’t work with Hulu:
Hulu is available only within the US and Japan. Bypassing its geo-restrictions is going to be a major task. But, if you’re still willing to take a chance and access the best shows on Hulu, use any one of these 5 premium Hulu VPN options (Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and FastestVPN). They’ve been tested out for a number of purposes.
However, I still urge you to check out multiple other user reviews and test the software out on your own. That’s the only way you’ll receive accurate results.
